Hydrogen Compression

High-Capacity Hydrogen Compression System

Our new technology and maintenance philosophy provides you with compressed H2 up to 900 bar at maximum availability and performance at a minimum Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Our experience with manufacturing large hydraulic cylinders and tribology systems since 1954, combined with the high pressure and H2 expertise from Resato Hydrogen B.V enabled us to introduce a unique compression technology to the market. Hydraulic intensifiers with a semi-lubricated seal system for high-capacity demand. The H2Direct is prepared for the future with capacities up to 11.000 Kg a day.

Key Features of Our Hydrogen Compressor

With our Maintenance approach we ensure a maximum availability and performance.

By remote monitoring we keep track of the condition of the system. This condition based approach for planned maintenance results in an efficient execution of the maintenance tasks with a minimum downtime.

In case of larger planned maintenance tasks, we exchange the complete module for a “maintenance module”.

By swapping the module, the compressor can continue to operate, while maintenance tasks are performed in a clean environment in a workshop.

The compression takes place in 2 stages and each stage has 2 intensifiers. Each set of intensifiers has its own drivetrain which gives the system 50% redundancy.

The modular design enables scaling the system to current and future needs.

The H2Direct compression system is a combination of an intensifier module with 2 or 3 intensifier stages & 1 or 2 drivetrain modules, that consist out of motor-pump combinations and controls.

With these modules, ouputs of 90kg or 180kg per hour at 600 or 900 bar can be configured.

90kg per hour equals the output of a 5MW Electrolyser (ELX) and 180 kg per hour to a 10MW ELX.

Various types of compressor technologies are available in the market today, but common challenges with current technology are (1) leakage of H2, (2) high maintenance cost due to short lifetime of dry seals and or (3) start & stop issues.

Most compressor technologies use dry seal systems that cause H2 leakage on average of 7%. Dry seals are also subject to high wear. Therefor maintenance intervals are short (< 1x per month) and OPEX costs high.

The H2Direct is equipped with a unique semi- lubricated gas seal with < 1% leakage. Because of the lubrication, the lifetime of the seal is long and has to be replaced only once a year, resulting in a high availability and low OPEX.

Although the gas seal of VHT is lubricated, no contamination is guaranteed, which makes this system fuell cell safe.

Instead of multiplying the number of compressors to meet higher future demands, we have chosen for supersizing.

As a result, H2Direct has a better TCO than a combination of multiple compressors.

Because of the used technology there is also no need for intermediate H2 storage units between the compressor and the filling system, which is a cost driven from CAPEX point of view.

The green production of H2 comes with start and stops in the proces. Especially power from PV (solar panels) comes and goes during the days or even within the hour.

The compressor technology of the H2 Direct allows unlimited start and stops to following this pattern.

All over the world, people are trying to find ways to help reduce environmental impact. Hydrogen fuel is one potential solution, as it’s completely free of emissions if it is produced from solar or wind energy. Linde Hydrogen FuelTech GmbH are increasing their capability to provide hydrogen fuel solutions and approached VHT for a solution on how to fuel vehicles in a more efficient way.
