At the Solitudobrug in Amsterdam, Van Halteren Technologies, in collaboration with Bosch Rexroth, implemented an advanced actuator solution for bridge operation. This project highlights our expertise in delivering robust, reliable, and highly efficient systems crucial for modern infrastructure.
A key benefit of our actuators is the significantly reduced installation and commissioning time. Delivered as pre-commissioned, factory-tested units (fully adjusted and oil-filled at our facility) they require only mechanical and electrical connections on-site. This streamlined approach minimizes disruptions and accelerates project completion.
Our solution offers exceptional sustainability compared to conventional drives. These actuators require substantially less steel and oil than traditional hydraulic systems, and maintenance is greatly reduced. Crucially, the absence of aging hydraulic hoses eliminates a common maintenance point, leading to a lower ecological footprint and reduced operational costs over the bridge’s lifespan.
The drive system is also remarkably energy-efficient. This is achieved through extremely low internal losses and the innovative ability to recover electrical energy when the bridge lowers. This regenerative function contributes to lower overall energy consumption and reduced long-term operating costs.
Reliability and simplicity are central to the design. The fundamentally straightforward drive principle ensures a low failure rate and high bridge availability. This design approach was pivotal in securing the project, as our solution outperformed competitors in the EMVI (Economically Most Advantageous Bid) evaluation, meeting the stringent 100-year lifespan requirement with notably lower maintenance needs.
Technically, the Solitudobrug presented specific challenges. Two actuators drive the bridge, sharing the load. To maintain simplicity, electronic control manages synchronization based on position and load pressure, avoiding complex hydraulic connections. Furthermore, the system allows bridge operation with just one active actuator (at half speed), while the other moves freely, demonstrating inherent flexibility and robustness.
