Van Halteren’s project based approach for bakeries

using a variety of electric machinery. When new equipment is added—such as
ovens, mixers, or large freezer units—the overall power demand can exceed the
limits of existing energy contracts.

At large-scale bakery production facilities, an increasing demand for electrical power is a common challenge. These facilities often produce bread, cookies, and other baked goods using a variety of electric machinery. When new equipment is added—such as ovens, mixers, or large freezer units—the overall power demand can exceed the limits of existing energy contracts.

To address this issue, many bakeries are turning to peak shaving solutions. Peak shaving refers to reducing the spikes in grid power demand by supplementing energy from alternative sources, such as solar panels or battery systems. In one recent project, an Energy Storage System (ESS) from Van Halteren Technologies was implemented to manage peak loads. This system includes a battery, inverter, and smart software that ensures seamless energy management.

When power demand exceeds the contracted limit, the ESS supplies the additional energy needed. During periods of lower demand, the system recharges, ensuring continuous operation without interruptions. This approach enables bakeries to maintain 24/7 production without being constrained by grid limitations.

Preparation is key

Successfully implementing an energy solution in bakery production facilities begins with a thorough analysis of the gap between power supply and operational demand. This often involves evaluating the energy profile before and after the installation of new machinery, such as ovens, mixers, or refrigeration units.

Based on these insights, bakeries can determine the appropriate specifications for an Energy Storage System (ESS). A typical setup might include an inverter with 250kW of power and a battery capacity of 720kWh, depending on the facility’s size and energy needs.

The installation process is typically smooth and efficient, especially when the ESS is digitally integrated with the facility’s existing power management system. Once commissioned—often within just a few days—the bakery benefits from increased power availability, enabling uninterrupted operations and supporting future expansion.
