The Ems barrage in Germany has already provided reliable protection against storm surges for 16 times since it was commissioned. VHT’s latest achievement involves overhauling the hydraulic cylinders at the Ems barrage for coastal protection. The cylinders are almost 13 meters long, each weighing over 20 tons.
Replacement and repair
The piston rods are replaced, and the cylinders got a general overhaul. The hydraulic cylinders, now equipped with Enduroq 3, offer enhanced resistance to environmental stresses. The renewed cylinders were finished as planned. Shipping operations
remained unaffected during the work, safeguarding the region’s economic strength. This project elevates VHT’s reputation in corrosion-resistant coastal protection solutions in worldwide projects, in collaboration with well-known partners.
The Ems barrage protects residents along the Ems and Lower Sachsen area against storm surges. It reverses storm surges that rise higher than 3.70 m above sea level, thereby ensuring a significantly higher standard of safety than continuous adjustments of the 110-kilometer-long main dikes along the Lower Ems. The barrage function ensures the flexibility of the Ems shipping route between Papenburg and Emden with 47 ship crossings. This flexibility is important for maintaining the economic strength of the region.
