We create lasting solutions to highly complex hydrodynamic research challenges.

Global climate changes have impact on coastal protection, offshore installations and propulsions for ships. This is why scientists and engineers work on new solutions with verification tests in hydrodynamic research labs, leading to new engineering standards and improved human safety.

For hydrodynamic research, we convert customer specifications into a system design and provide excellent hydrodynamic equipment that supports the research and test goals of scientists and engineers.

Hydrodynamic research solutions that we offer

Our typical wave generator solutions are:
  • Wave generator and absorber systems
  • Control systems including Active Reflection Compensation, and application software
  • Carriages
  • Adjustable basin floors including drive and fixation system
  • Adjustable platforms for lifting the wave generators for variable hinge depth
  • Stowage systems for lifting the wave generators out of the basin
  • Planar motion mechanisms
  • Refurbishment of existing equipment

Wave Generator Solutions

With over 30 years of experience, we are specialized in customized design, construction, installation, testing, and tuning of wave generator systems for research applications. Each system is made according to customer requirements regarding wave performance, dimensions and local installation situations.

The wave generator solutions provide unidirectional and multi directional waves, long crested and short crested waves, includes wet back or dry back designs, as well as piston type systems for shallow water or hinged type systems for deep water applications. We offer consultative services for cost-effective solutions and can both build new systems and upgrades of existing hydraulic or electric wave generators, incorporating advanced control systems.

The similarity between all these different systems is the excellent dynamic performance with high-quality, accurate waves.

Wave Absorber Solutions

In addition to wave generating installations, wave absorber systems can be supplied. Depending on the waves generated, the best design for the absorber can be determined. Absorbers can also contain adjustable elements that provide specific options in the wave tank. There too, the stiffness of the structure is very important to achieve optimal damping of the waves and to prevent the generation of spurious waves.

Carriage Systems

Carriages can be operated in different ways, it can either tow a model or follow a self-propelled model. Especially in the tow-modus, the accuracy of the speed is very important, and the model may not be influenced by external forces due to vibrations or deflections of the carriage.

As a supplier of drive and control technology, as well as mechanical structures, we have extensive experience in designing these specific systems where rail - wheel combinations, determining the forces and degrees of freedom as well as stiffness are the most important aspects to successfully design and build such systems and offering the user successfully testing for years without the risk of high maintenance costs.

Active Reflection Compensation

The wave generator can be equipped with our Active Reflection Compensation (ARC), absorbing up to 90% of reflected wave height, reducing re-reflection and enhancing the quality of the generated wave. ARC extends test duration, reduces low-frequency oscillations, and shortens the time between tests by actively stretching the water surface. Our ARC is applicable to both deep- and shallow water systems and works for unidirectional (2D) and multidirectional (3D) wave generation.

Control System

The control system of the AC Servo drive systems for wave generator systems, is based on position control with feedback from the motor resolver. Controlling the segment in position results in high accuracy motion and allows the user full flexibility to design custom position setpoints for the wave generator. For active absorption the wave height measurement from the wave gauge is used to adjust the position control setpoint based on deviations between the expected and the measured wave height directly in front of the segment. Controlling the position and applying direct feedback of the water height in front of the segment excludes various sources of errors that can be introduced using force control that are caused by imperfect modelling of the various disturbance forces.

Application software

Hydrodynamic research systems come with specialized application software, like the Wave Synthesis and Generation Software for wave generators. This software allows customization with user-created wave files and absorption algorithms. Additionally, it safeguards the system from unsafe situations and prevents overloading of mechanical structures.

Additional services

We offer upgrades for existing hydraulic or electric wave generator systems, along with new control systems. The delivery includes a risk analysis to ensure compliance with safety regulations, with transparent communication about residual risks and necessary measures. Beyond supplying systems, we provide installation, commissioning, tuning, testing, on-site training, and advice on use and maintenance. Maintenance contracts and annual inspections are also available as part of our comprehensive services.
